Last year, around April or so, my husband was telling me about a lipstick that doesn’t rub off, doesn’t smudge, and lasts up to 18 hours. He told me that he loved when I wore lipstick but that I rarely ever did. Which is true because, like most women, I don’t like “eating” my lipstick as it smudges onto my drink or food or teeth. I especially did like the fact that you have to reapply throughout the day. And if nothing else, I am lazy, I am not going to tell you otherwise. At the time, he told me about Lipsense and I fell in love. Some other day, I’ll write a post about the rabbit hole of Lipsense that I fell into and how, I have been working to get myself out of that hole/addiction. But, one thing was true, the older versions of Lipsense worked and I fell in deep love.
But…as I said, I had to stop the craziness and my group of friends mentioned another brand that made a lip stain, that was a one step process instead of the Lipsense two step (color + gloss), it was matte, and also lasted up to 24 hours. So I was intrigued. At the time I had never heard of the brand Luminess Airess but my much more makeup savvy friends said it was a good brand, known for it’s airbrush make up. The Forever Reign Lip Stains were also going through a major sale at the time, so for $9.99 + shipping and handling, I figured why not give it a go? The color assortments were very modern and on trend. The original price per stain was $24.00. So I bought 4 colors to try at first and then bought another 7 once I realized it worked.
But, first thing’s first, what is Luminess Airess Forever Reign Lip Stains? Below you’ll find the details from their website.

Here are some of the colors that I received that I have worn:
Overall, I like the matte sheen, the colors are on point, and I like that it’s a one step process. However, as a chronic chapped lipped sufferer (and yes, I drink a ton of water a day, I don’t drink sodas, and only have a coffee in the morning and still cannot seem to beat these chapped lips), my lips feel dry with this lip stain on. I know some friends put a gloss over it to help with the dryness, but I figured that defeats the purpose of a matte color, right? The wear time is pretty good, however, like Lipsense, it does have a hard time when you are eating anything remotely greasy. And unlike Lipsense, since it does not require the gloss, there really is no barrier to help it fight the fats from the food you are eating. My wear time seems pretty good, at about 8 or 9 hours and with having had lunch, my waterline does start to show wear. But usually, it’s just at the waterline so I just do a quick touch up on this part.
One thing to keep in mind is that these lip stains need to be applied with a very thin coat because the formula seems to be thicker by nature. I tend to scrape it off pretty good on the edge of the tube before applying. The wand actually feels like it’s dry, that’s how little product I have on it when applying. My first few times of applying this lip stain, I made the mistake of applying it like any regular lip gloss. The stain then never dried and was extremely tacky. It also wore off as soon as I touched my lips to a cup because it was still so wet and hadn’t set. So make sure when you are applying you use a very thin coat.
Since the staying power is really good, you’re probably wondering how you remove it. Let me tell you, there was no instructions so it was through a process of trial and error before I found something that worked. In the meantime, I scrubbed the crap out of lips, they hurt and were super red. Unlike Lipsense, a Neutrogena bar soap did not remove this lip stain. It pretty much laughed at the orange bar. Witch hazel was a no go. Actually, after a few different attempts the best thing that I could come up with to remove it was micellar water. Make sure you get it all off because if you don’t, and any remain, when you brush your teeth it will leave a gooey mess on your toothbrush.
Now, you’re probably wondering where you get these wonderful colors. Well, here is where it gets complicated. You can only buy the product on their website if you have an consultant’s number/name. I ordered under a friend of a friend. So it’s basically a MLM/distributorship with online ordering capabilities. And as of today, it looks like they updated their available colors and prices have gone back up to $17.09, regular retail is $24.00. Quite a few of the colors I bought previously were on super discount because it looks like they were discontinuing the color and also because they were making way for new packaging (it’s now in a rounded tube). But have no fear, you can locate a distributor or artist, as they call them on their page. It’s definitely worth the purchase, but maybe wait for another super sale. Happy Hunting!
Overall grade A- , pointed deducted because you have to have a distributor before you can purchase. And because they discontinued many of the more interesting colors (but they still have some fun colors.) Hopefully, they will introduce new colors soon.
